The death of Nyla's husband comes as a shock to everyone except Nyla. What’s shocking to Nyla is her inability to grieve his death like a typical loving wife should grieve. But Nyla isn't a typical loving wife. She's a woman in desperate need to breathe. The oxygen in her life has long gone, and the astonishing thing she feels from her husband's death is relief, not grief.

Even more astonishing is the rare and unexpected friendship which develops between Nyla and her dead husband's mistress. However, Nyla isn’t aware her new best friend is a former mistress. And as their friendship deepens into an unshakable bond, Nyla is forced to face secrets her husband took with him to his grave. This means she has to sift through mud to unravel the truth. A truth that’s better off dead. Yet through it all, the one thing which makes Nyla violently breathless, is the exact same thing that causes her to finally breathe.

"Smoothness is just an illusion. We all have rugged roads to take. It's up to us how we choose to walk them." My favorite quote from this book because it is absolutely true!

This is a story of 2 women, both at unfulfilling points in their lives who form a friendship like either of the women have never experienced. But, peril is lurking around the corner. Nyla Kane is a bakery owner and mother to college-aged twins who separated from her philandering husband shortly before he is killed in a plane crash. Vivian Phillips is a therapist who had a brief affair with Nathan Kane, Nyla's husband, and is now pregnant with his child. Through life's circumstances - which Vivian fought at every turn - Nyla and Vivian form a deep bond. What will happen when Vivian spills her secrets? Will they bonds break or strengthen? Will the two be able to move forward after such betrayal? With lovable character like cooky Mrs. Parks and enlightening Stephen, and jealous and meddling Lettie and Stacey, and sexy Kenton, the story unfolds with a little drama and a lot of flare.

Although I felt the story was a little overwritten at times and a bit drawn out in others, I think the story was overall well written and a great debut for this author. Looking forward to other titles.

Sifting Through Mud eBook Demetria Foster Gray Reviews

Shifting Through Mud is the story of an unlikely friendship between widow and mistress. Nyla, the widow, is unaware that her new friend, Vivian, had been carrying on an affair with her now deceased husband—and is pregnant with his baby! As the two women meet, become friends, and eventually nurture a bond of sisterhood, the reader turns each page with the realization that the train wreck is coming sooner or later, Nyla is going to find out the truth. And what will become of their friendship then? You have to read this wonderful story to find out. The author does a great job of making us sympathetic to all the characters—even the mistress! I enjoyed this book from page one and look forward to future novels from Demetria Foster Gray. Well done!
Sifting Through Mud is a great story of friendship, betrayal and forgiveness. Demetria Foster Gray does a fantastic job weaving two characters’ unlikely friendship by telling both of their points of view Nyla, the widow who unknowingly befriends the pregnant mistress of her dead husband, Nathan, and Vivian, the other woman who tries to fight off the friendship initially. These two women fall in like with one another and find themselves connected emotionally whether they want to be or not.
This is a debut novel for this author and it captivated me from beginning to end. It's a story of friendship, betrayal hurt and forgiveness.

When Nyla met Vivian, little did she know that she had an affair with her deceased husband, who had impregnated her. Vivian forged the relationship while keeping this secret for months. I was so caught up in the characters that I just watched the story flow, without any judgment. The story is well developed and I would highly recommend it.
This book has it all an emotion-twisting plot, smart women characters, humor, and even a little spicy romance. Ms. Gray does an excellent job penning characters you both admire and shake your head at--in other words, characters very much like us.

Sifting Through Mud is the story of two women on paths of their own making, with a little help from destiny. Nyla has just lost her husband, but the emotional fallout from his death is convoluted by the bitter taste of their failed marriage. Vivian is a smart woman who has made some unfortunate decisions. Their paths cross, and they form a sister-like friendship. Unfortunately, the secret Vivian carries may rip them apart, forever.

A great, well-written read that will move you.
All-in-all, it this is a touching story about a friendship that develops from unconventional circumstances - a widow who’d separated from her husband before he died, and the husband’s ex-lover who’d become impregnated by him. The experiences and characters are believable, even if often they sound alike and include quite a few clichés; except for the ex-lover’s neighbor, who seems like no one else. There is a good dynamic between the peripheral characters, and I wish the ending included them more. Though the ending is indeed emotional and touching, it comes quickly, calling attention to some loose ends, even if they were minor threads.
Sifting Through Mud is the tale of a complicated friendship of Nyla and Vivian, two very different people who find a strong bond with one another. I loved the well-developed and very flawed characters in the book. (Bonus side characters are Mrs. Parks & Lettie - I loved them both.) Vivian, especially, made some incredibly bad choices, she had to pay the consequences for, but who among us hasn't made choices that were not in our best interest. I loved the raw emotions of this book and the writing style of Ms. Gray. This is a book about love and forgiveness that makes you think what are you willing to give -and give up- for a friendship? Fans of women's fiction will definitely enjoy this book.
I loved reading SIFTING THROUGH MUD because the story is far different from anything I've read previously. It tells the complicated story of a friendship that develops between Nyla, who's estranged husband, Nathan, recently died, and Vivian--his mistress. Both Nyla and Vivian are complex, well-developed characters. While Nyla has no clue who Vivian really is, or about the growing secret that she's keeping, Vivian knows exactly who Nyla is.

As the bond between Nyla and Vivian deepens, Vivian's betrayal looms larger. Yet, despite this, and Vivian's other major faults, I couldn't help but to feel empathy toward her character. This is due to Gray's layered development of Vivian's character, which shines throughout this book.

Gray also did a splendid job in developing three-dimensional secondary characters that sparkled and enhanced the story. I look forward to reading whatever Gray writes next. I'd even be happy to revisit the lives of Nyla and Vivian.
