Summer Holiday in Germany (II): Viums and its Surroundings
![]() |
| I love the Nature, but missed the City Life. |
Two weeks in Viums was really a back to nature holiday for me. The village was very quiet, the landscape was green and clean, and the air was fresh. It was on July, and I realized that my polen allergy was not as bad as I had a few years ago. I am not sure if I am really free from the spring allergy at all, but at least I can hope that my immune system is changing now after living a few years outside Germany. The holiday resort was the perfect place for kids, cycler, hiker, and mountain climber. I love those peacefull life and the Nature, but on the other hand, I still can not leave the cities. Not the modern hectic cities, but the old ones with small alleys, old buildings, european architectures, the parks with colorfull flowers and the smell of hot cappucinos or lates.
We did some short trips to our surrounding cities. Brixen ist the nearest. It is located only 5 km from Viums. It is an old town with some pedestrian zones and cuble stone streets where many Italian restaurants dan cafes can be found. It is small but it has some fashion shops such us Bennetton, Mango and Zara. Not to many but enough, right?
We drove another day to the city of Meran for another old town walks. Enjoying the old building with its unique arschitecture. The smells of Pizzas from every tratorias. In Meran, we visited the famous castle Schloss Trautmansdorf which is famous for its impresive Botanical Garden. The castle has 12 hectars Botanical Garten boasting 80 samples of natural landscape from every country in the world. The paths through the garten was hilly, up and down, make a circle, then going down to the big artificial lake. The Castle standing huge on the top of the hill.
Another short drive, we visited a natural lake the Antholzersee. It was cold when we arrived to the Biathlon city. But many Italian tourist were there already. The lake has clean blue water, the mountains standing surrounding it. Some ducks and fishes swimming in it. The water was ice cold, but the animals did not bother with the water temperature. Antholzersee is good for a short round walking, the paths was up and down but not too sharp, there were some wooden bridge in some part, and at the end of the lake, there was a big playground and a restaurant for a coffee and a piece of cake. We did also another short hiking near Viums, at the Gilfenklamm near Sterzing. It has another kind of walking path, many wooden and stone stairs, up and up and up and the very narrow river flowing far below us. The rocks and the stalagnit hanging above us. Water dropping from time to time. It was tiring, but fun, especially when we reached the top and found the restaurant which served us hot potatoes knodel soup.
